What does a doula actually do?

This is a really good question.  A doula is a professionally trained birth companion.  Every doula is different so it is important that you find the perfect fit for you and your family.  Your doula will guide you every step of the way through your labor a delivery.  According to DONA, a doula is "a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible."

I have come to learn as of the last few years that a doula has also become a guard of sorts for a mother.  Hospitals have adopted a policy that the faster mothers are moved through the hospital, the more money they can make.

Doctors also are limited on time and will pressure mothers into birth interventions to move her through a faster birth.  Sadly, in America, we have reached epidemic level proportions of unnecessary c-sections.  Compared to other countries, we are at a staggering rate, the most morbid fact of all, these c-sections primarily take place monday-friday between the hours of 8-5.  This shows that they are being done at levels that are not medically necessary.  The negative toll on a woman's body, and the problems that can happen for a baby from a c-section are rarely considered.  Its just become commonplace.  With the assistance of a doula you can reduce your chance of having a c-section by 60%! 60!  See the picture below on how the United States stacks up against other countries.  AND Here is a great article about evidenced based birth outcomes with a doula present.
